The kitchen is still not done.............BUT I thought I'd share a couple of sneak peeks:
This old screen door BohoHandyman is holding up was one I spotted at a reuse place. It was much wider than any normal door but I KNEW I had to have it. We stored it knowing it would get repurposed somehow. Then we started the kitchen project and I knew I wanted to get rid of the existing doors on the pantry cabinet. Enter old screen door find. It was far too wide for the cabinet and too short but I had an idea.
I asked BohoHandyman if he could cut out the middle section of the old door and put it back together at the right width. Which he did...using dowels to put it back together it was the perfect width. Then there was the fact it was shorter because the cabinet is taller than a standard door. I again asked BohoHandyman......can you put insert a piece of wood at the top and the lower the top shelf inside? So he set about to do just that. The inserted wood will have the seams puttied and painted along with the cabinet so it won't be obvious.
Now the old door fit perfectly!
BUT there was the question of what to put behind it......dark screen? Nah, too dusty. Fabric? Nah, too country. Then a friend said something about that sparked an idea!!! I went to Tap Plastics.
I talked to the guys telling them what I wanted but everything would have been too thick and I need 1/16" thick material. All they had was clear so I asked if I could paint it or frost it and that's when they told me "just use a sander all over it and it will look frosted" (showing me an example). WOOHOO! Within minutes they had the piece cut for me and industrial double sided tape.
I sanded the old door and BohoHandyman spray painted it black. He then sanded the acrylic piece on both sides. After the door was dry we laid it out on a table again and traced the "frosted" acrylic with a white pencil to know exactly where to put the double sided tape. We then took off the top side protective sheeting on the tape and very carefully placed the acrylic on to the door. VOILA!
It was installed on the cabinet using 2 long piano hinges on the inside.
The door closes with a magnetic closure perfectly and the fork handle is from the cutlery we used everyday when I was growing up.
At first I wasn't too happy seeing the end of each shelf through the acrylic even though they will be painted cream soon - the acrylic is too thin to block everything out. But that's ok with me, it IS a pantry after all. Supposed to be that sort of UrbanFarmhouseCottage look anyway. Just do NOT call it country!
You can see the top piece of wood he added but tomorrow we FINALLY paint the cabinets so it will blend in. Even though the door was installed prior to painting it won't hinder the process.
My photos could be better and with better lighting but this was just too give a peek.
The other thing I'm showing you is the new fixture that now hangs over the copper top island. My BohoHandyman had to go up in the attic crawl space that is filled with blown-in insullation and move the wiring over so it was centered over the new island. When he came back down he looked like he was covered in gray snow.....what a guy, eh? I should have taken a photo.....he DID wear a mask though asnd did a fantastic job.
You can see behind that the cabinets are basically empty and ready.......I cannot wait as it's really going to brighten up the room.
Hopefully some time next week I will be posting more before and after photos including the entire room.....fingers crossed! (and with better lighting and the tripod)
I hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek. BohoHandyman keeps calling me (in his best NY Bronx accent) "you're the brains of the outfit baby"! I am VERY lucky he is willing to carry out my visions as he is the "brawn of the outfit"! We make a good team.
Have a great weekend everyone! And remember, you may just have something stored in your garage or basement or attic that has a whole new purpose waiting for it!
Love,
Lisa

P.S. I miss doing art, I am aching for paint and canvas BUT for now this is another form of art!
