The strangest thing happened this morning. I awoke to the strangest sounds. They were muffled and naturally I assumed they were coming from the cats in the other room. As I opened the hall door to go in to the living room Daisy and Lucy were perched on their post watching birds out the window. "Do you two hear that?" I asked them but as you can imagine my only response was to be customarily ignored.
I stopped to listen, there they were again but this time they were more audible and sounded distinctly like a soft snoring. I looked around and tried to follow the sounds, it was almost like a sweet hum and snore combined. Then I caught sight of the first one on my sideboard, nestled among the woven pears on a cake stand, it almost blended in. A Lullaby Fairy all curled up and comfortable sound asleep on a wee bed. It's little iridescent wings rose up and down as it breathed.
I knew this wee thing couldn't be the only one so I followed the sound trail once again. All the while the cats remained aloof and uninterested in the symphony of sound emanating from all areas of the house.
I stopped and didn't move, letting my eyes do the searching as not to disturb anything. What's this? My nest? The faux robin's eggs look like they were moved. Upon closer inspection I saw it, nestled in a half a clam shell it, too, was curled up in blissful slumber. It's golden curls and large sparkly wings now gleamed in front of me. "Shhhh", I said to no one.
I stood silent again........I knew there were going to be more and more by the sounds and my own intuition. I decided to open the front door as the air was still that morning cool and that's where I saw it. We keep a red wooden bowl on a cabinet by the front, you know for keys and mail and such....BUT all of those things were beside the bowl now. I peered inside and there it was, nestled on a leaf inside the bowl having sweet dreams, you could tell. It's wee pointed hat an upside down flower it hummed and snored at the same time. I let everything stay as it was so not to disturb, I didn't even end up opening the front door. I didn't have the heart.
When I turned to go back towards the kitchen I heard something.....not quite a snore and not quite a hum.......it was more a high trill sound. The sound one would make when thinking of wonderful and magical things, when dreaming of far away places and big adventures.
On my end table is a large conch shell full of other seashells and there she was amid that, the candle holder and an iron bird.....she's made a spot for herself to sleep and dream. She must have some how folded her wings as they weren't evident, perhaps her golden locks covered them. I tried to look closer and even peek under her hair very gently. Why there were no wings at all and then I realized she was a mushroom girl from the mossy glen. she speaks the Lullaby Fairy language. She had a wee flower in her hair and just as the fairies were, she too was curled up in slumber. I tiptoed away as not to disturb her either.
I walked in to the kitchen again, scratching my head as to where more might be. They obviously were out of their element and it was rather perplexing actually as to why they weren't asleep in the mossy glen instead of my house. I was not about to wake any of them to ask. I just kept scanning every area with my eyes. What's that?
I have three bell jars in various sizes, I had them on the kitchen table as I am going to ready them for Fall decor when something under one of them caught my glance. She'd made a nest under her curly leaf of some excelsior and lying on her tummy (her wee bum in the air) you could readily see whatever she was dreaming made her happy. I worried she was not getting any air under the bell jar but she was softly hum-snoring like the rest so I let her be.
On the other side of the bell jars I have a mercury glass orange pumpkin I recently purchased. Gathering things bit by bit waiting for Fall I am putting it out on the kitchen table to go through. When I moved the glass pumpkin I saw this one. It nearly blended in. Once again all curled up, nestled in slumber upon a leaf it was obviously dreaming of laying in a large pumpkin patch somewhere. Although I truly doubt pumpkins grow in a mossy glen. I have wee pumpkins I made and I think perhaps I will gift one to this wee fairy....one of it's very own.
At this point I thought perhaps that was it, I'd found them all. I would be very quiet and go to my studio and let them all sleep as long or as many days as they liked. I surmised that some morning I would eventually awaken to the sound of silence and they would be gone I know not where.
But I was wrong...........for as I was about to walk away I heard a lullaby, not the words, just the tune....someone was humming it. It was soft and sweet and quite lulling.......where was it coming from? I looked around again.....in teapots and vases and under things and over things and in the fruit bowl. I even opened the cupboards.
Because of the cats we don't get to have house plants. They think they're salad. So the only remaining one we keep high and away. I reached for the plant to move it in my search when I realized THAT was where the song was coming from.
There on a large flat, textured leaf they lay together. A tousled haired girl, her eyes closed and her arm around a wee fairy. She was humming the lullaby as it curled up against her in safety and love. I could tell she was the one who took care of these creatures......she was the one who found them all safe places to slumber in my home. She was the one who they could go too if frightened and she would console them with her lullabies. She and the mushroom girl spoke their language. I touched her ever so slightly and without ever opening her eyes she spoke to me in a lullaby voice (and as though reading my mind) "soon the fairies will be going to mossy glens, I know not where and I know not how, but it is my hope and my dream that all of these Lullaby Fairies (and there will be more of them) find the perfect place to slumber and be safe, cared for and loved". In the meantime I reassured her that they will be safe with me for as long as they desired and when the time came I would make sure their journeys to wherever they go next would be one of ease. She nodded and began the lullaby humming once again.
Shhhhhh! Don't wake them.
Just sit quietly and listen to their sounds.
Have a most delightful weekend!
